WALPOLE --

HIGH SCHOOL -- Walpole High School student representative Katerina told the School Committee on Oct. 22 that fall sports have kept students busy, with teams competing in football, soccer, field hockey and volleyball. She said the field hockey team had games against Natick and Lowerwood that week, while the football team was set to face Braintree on Oct. 23. The athletic department has also opened registration for winter sports, she said.

Separately, the committee approved an out-of-state field trip request for the Walpole High School boys basketball team to travel to Warwick, Rhode Island, for a scrimmage at Bishop Hendricken High School on Saturday, Dec. 12. Boys basketball coach Scott Shamming told the committee the trip, scheduled just before the season opens, is meant to build team chemistry and will include a connected food drive, with players bringing donations to hand out. The committee voted 6-0 to approve the trip.

YOUTH LEAGUES -- The Walpole Youth Soccer Association announced a "Parents' Night Out" fundraiser at Napper Tandy's in Walpole on Saturday, Nov. 14, which organizers called the last Saturday of the season. WYSA said plans include a suggested contribution at the door, light appetizers, a cash bar and raffles, with details still being finalized. In the same announcement, the organization noted it is responsible for maintaining its grass fields at Ellis and Mylod, including mowing, lining, fertilizing, equipment and insurance, and said it recently replaced most of its goals and nets, with a few still needing repairs. WYSA said it is working to keep registration costs down without major donors and is looking to the community for support.
