Walpole Backs $8.4 Million Capital Budget Plan
Budget Committee · Meeting of August 18, 2026
Walpole's Capital Budget Committee reviewed $18 million in requests and backed roughly $8.4 million in recommendations, with no formal votes taken until a continuation session the next night. Town Administration's Jim Johnson reported $13,329,516 in newly certified free cash. School officials said rising costs have pushed one high school HVAC floor's price from $250,000 to as much as $600,000, with $300,000 recommended toward the foreign language wing this year after $350,000 originally set aside for Plimpton building renovations was diverted to keep the math wing on schedule.
Health Director Melissa Renieri's $20,000 request for AED maintenance across 21 municipal units was fully recommended. Fire officials outlined a $430,000 ambulance purchase and a roughly $14 million satellite fire station proposed for conservation land near Route 1 and Coney Street, with a Select Board feasibility presentation set for September 1. "It seems to be hovering around seven percent," one committee member said of capital spending's share of the town budget.
Recreation Department requests, including pool repairs after a project revealed the South Walpole Pool lacked rebar, went unfunded this cycle.
